首先，作为一个例子，它最直接的作用自然就是用来有力地证明作者的观点，因此在解题时，我们可以从这个角度着手来寻找答案。我们来看看下面这道题目。

 

　　They also enter into a number of mutually beneficial relationships with plants and other organisms. In addition, fungi are the source of many of the most potent antibiotics used in clinical medicine, including penicillin.

 

　　The passage mentions "penicillin" as an example of

 

　　(A) a medicine derived from plants

 

　　(B) a beneficial use of fungi

 

　　(C) a product of the relationship between plants and fungi

 

　　(D) a type of fungi that grows at extreme temperatures  temperatures.

 

　　这道题目作者考察的是penicillin这个单词的作用，很显然这个单词penicillin（盘尼西林）出现在including这个标识举例的单词后面是原文作者所用到的一个例子，想要判断它的作用我们就应该仔细分析这个例子之前的内容，之前的文章说到fungi are the source of many of the most potent antibiotics，意思是真菌也是许多有效的抗生素的成份，表明了fungi的药用价值，很显然这个盘尼西林的例子就是用fungi做成的抗生素中的一种，因此，这个例子很有力地证明了作者的观点即真菌的药用价值，最后我们就能准确的找到答案为B选项。

 

　　接下来我们再来看看举例目的题的第二种解题思路，作为作者在原文给出的例子时还有另外一种作用，那就是可以更形象具体地展现原文主题的特点。我们同样来看一下下面的例子。

 

　　Archaeopteryx were animals about the size of a crow, with an archeosaurian type of skull, a long neck, a compact body balanced on a pair of strong hind limbs, and a long tail. The forelimbs were enlarged and obviously functioned as wings.

 

　　3. Why does the author mention "a crow"?

 

　　(A) to indicate the size of Archaeopteryx

 

　　(B) To specify the age of the Archaeopteryx fossils

 

　　(C) To explain the evolutionary history of Archaeopteryx

 

　　(D) To demonstrate the superiority of the theropod to Archaeopteryx

 

　　这里作者考察原文crow（乌鸦）这个词的作用，回到原句我们发现作者用crow的大小来类比Archaeopteryx这种动物的体型，以此形象生动地具体描述Archaeopteryx的身体大小，很显然这里的crow这个例子的作用就是我们刚才提到的具体展示文章主题特点。最后也就能够顺利得出答案是A选项。

 

　　纵观以上两种解题思路，我们不难发现举例目的题中的例子都是围绕作者的观点和重要主体信息所铺设的，其作用目的显然也是与作者的观点紧密相关的，因此同学们在解题时也应该牢牢扣住例子与原文作者观点或论述对象特点之间的关系来进行判断。其实这也是TOEFL Junior阅读部分的一大本质考点即考察同学们对于句与句之间逻辑关系的理解，希望大家能够有所针对地进行复习训练。
